17/12/14 Cath Davis Lecture : Material Girl

This evening I attended a lecture by my constellation teacher, As I have been dong research over the last few weeks for my essay I feel as though this talk has given me the last push I need with inspiration and more academic theory examples to support my work. I can now see even more contextual meaning within the dress and am eager to include this within my essay.

I have chosen to study Alexander McQueen’s Razor dress from the VOSS spring/summer 2001 collection. Although I have struggled to find many books on his work as most of them have been taken from the library I have collected enough information to work with for this first draft, but as I was saying I feel as though this talk has refreshed what I was taught back in October and I now feel more confident in explaining and deconstructing his work.

I will be revisiting my essay tonight to make amendments and reconsider my original thoughts and conceptions about the dress.

Understanding Colour Reflection

During this process of Understanding Colour I am now more confident with the concept of colour. Before joining this program I only had a brief understanding of colour theory but during the past month I feel as though I have gained valuable information which will benefit me greatly during subject next year as experimentation with colour is one of the main tasks, as well as during field two in January. Whilst securing my work placement for field two the project manager could not stress enough about how important understanding colour was, I feel as though I can now join in January feeling confident about my knowledge of colour.

My first session of understanding colour was a very daunting one for me as I have  always tried to avoid colour or just use simple theories also my work was poorly presented and very sloppy. Since practicing these methods in my work space and at home I can see how I have become more confident with mixing colours to create my own personal gradients, how I now take more care to when considering colours appropriately and carefully as well as looking after my work.

After attending the layering workshop I now understand how by applying certain colours in a particular way can create more dimensional effects and how light sources are created, this is something I had ever heard of before and since practicing it my work has improved a lot and now has a more realistic effect.

By understanding colour as a experience, image, feeling and idea it has made me consider what colours to use to evoke a particular mood or distort the audiences perception of the image for example changing the typical connotations of a colour such as red normally associated with danger or anger. I also now understand that the intensity of different colour also effect the audiences perception and this something I plan to use in my future work.

The introduction of new artists which I have never heard of before has benefited me greatly, I can now reflect upon that artists work and question how they have approached their work through the use of colour and consider how i can do this within my own discipline. This will allow me to be more open and experimental with my choice of colour, I feel as though both old and contemporary artists can influence the way in which I think and have a positive effect on the outcome of my project.

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this program and I am very pleased with what I have gained. I have a greater understanding of colour theory, old and new artists and I am now more confident using colour within my work. I am also very pleased with how this program relates strongly to both my own discipline textiles and field two. During term two of textiles experimentation with colour is one of the most important factors of the module as well as field two. I will be collecting images, artist’s work, collecting colour swatches as well as making my own which will be put into a colour theory file, I plan to present these in a organized way which I can use for future reference.

16/12/14 Presentation for understanding colour

Today I presented my power-point presentation in a pecha kucha format. I decided to do it in this way because this s how i am used to presenting my work in textiles, I find it a easier and more simplistic way of explaining my work and I feel more confident with this method.

I feel as though the presentation went really well I did go over my time transitions because I wasn’t expecting questions to be asked during the presentation but this didn’t matter and I found it better having people asking questions during the presentation because was able to elaborate on that particular slide imminently. I had some very possessive feedback and it has given me a boost about the quality of my work and I also had some helpful suggestions about different techniques I can use in my work in the future such as layering in different ways to create my desired effect..

Overall I am very pleased with how today went and really enjoyed watching the other presentations and what outcomes the other students have produced as a result of this program.
