Independent study day reflection.

Today I reflected on how my Field module has influenced me and upon reflection I can see that I am already taking steps to be more organised and active within my practice. I have ordered samples from my hypothetical client to study they’re work closer to gain a greater understanding of they’re style and techniques, one of these techniques I have noticed is that they are very expressive with the use of line making and often use bold lines to build up definition by using cross hatching opposed to shading. I feel as though I can relate to this as I am often very expensive with my line making also. It has been suggested to edit our hypothetical briefs and mood boards, I have bought the boards and just waiting for the rest of my samples to arrive so I can mount them onto the boards.

I will be selecting a new colour scheme for my second board and will be selecting my colours from my Pantone book so I can get a precise colour match on Photoshop or illustrator when it comes to working on my design.

Overall I feel as though today has been a successful one as I have had time to consider how my work has been influenced  and what methods and new skills I will be applying to my practice to achieve my desired results.

04/12/2014 Understanding colour

Today’s workshop was understanding how to layer paints, I found this very helpful as my experience with paints has been limited before starting this subject. The teacher showed his own work as examples and explained how he creates 3D visual effects through the use of shading, light and layering with his paints. I found him very inspiring because he was clearly very passionate about the subject and very helpful. I had some great advice off him when asking what techniques and materials i could use for my subject in textiles. I tried creating the effect of a jewel beetles shell with the use of greens and blues but found the outcome not so successful but I am sure with practice I will achieve the results I want,

Overall I found today very useful and inspiring, I will be going into town tomorrow to invest in some pearlescent paper and paints which was advice by my teacher and practicing the techniques gained from today in the future to enhance these new skills.

Understanding colour 02/12/14

I found today’s lecture on understanding colour very insightful, we looked at colour as a language, colour as image, colour as substance and colour as experience. All the examples show gave me a good understanding of what was ment by each of these sub headings.

I feel as though I have gained valuable information from this lecture such as a number or artists who explore the use of colour and challenge the theories through the use of experimentation and change of perspective.

I did not have a workshop today so I will be spending the rest of my day researching for my constellation essay and contacting companies for work experience.

Overall today has been a successful day and I look forward to Thursdays workshop.

Understanding colour: Lesson three. 25/11/2014

Today we looked at the work of Johannes Itten spiritual ideas, aspect of colour and the way in which he demonstrates harmonic colour for example contrast and simultaneous contrast. I found this first half of today’s session very helpful because i learn that there are in fact seven colour contrasts, we also looked at Itten’s colour wheel which i will be researching into further and including samples in my subject colour theory file for future referencing, I will resist recreating a colour wheel for now encase this is a task set in the future during field.

For the second half of today’s session we had to create a range of colour hues from our primary colours and two grey scales showing how a mixed black from all three primary colours differs to a manufactured black. I feel as though I have made quite an improvement from last weeks work as my last samples were very sloppy and poorly presented. Today I took the time to carefully consider my decisions when colour mixing and to take my time to ensure a tidy outcome. We were also given card to paint on which made a big difference to photocopying paper which easily wrinkles and curls when wet. I also found the task were we had to stare at a colour and blink to see a complimentary colour, the science behind it is a bit complex to explain but I did find the experiment very interesting and fun. I might try this out in the future and see if it influences my work.

Overall I am very pleased with today and feel as though my understanding of colour is much greater than before and more confident when it comes to experimenting with colour, something which I would desperately avoid in the past. I am really looking forward to Thursdays lesson and the next coming weeks.

Self Reflection for Part one 11/11/2014

I have thoroughly enjoyed the researching process of this module, I have learnt how to take inspiration from a variety of images, how to narrow down a number of designers and styles to establish what style and to understand what market area most strongly applies to me which has helped me to understand what potential market area I wish to work in in the future.

For the first stage of the module I looked into general images that applied to all three market areas such as Interiors, paper based designs and fashion textiles. From the start I strongly believed that fashion textiles would have been my main area of interest, but as my general research began to build I noticed how I was unconsciously taking more interest in interior designs. Whilst researching into paper based designs I did find some interesting independent designers and high end companies with very appealing designs but I could only find limited information on a number of them, I emailed the companies and designers for more information about themselves/ their ethics but only one replied.

When choosing my final three designers I found it quite an easy process as I found I had a passionate interest in the style of two interior designers, Timorous Beasties for their edgy designs and De Gornay for their traditional and detailed styles and methods. I was also intrigued by the marketing process, designs and ethics of Paper Chace.

I found the final process a bit more difficult as I knew I had a strong interest for both interior designers which both had unique styles. I eventually decided for Timorous Beasties as their sinister messages yet appreciation for historical textiles won me over. This company uses both traditional and digitally aided methods to create their designs, I feel as though by following this process it would be more beneficial as I am not a fine artist and do not have the time or man power to hand paint my designs onto wall hangings.

When deciding on a theme I felt as though to stay true to this company’s beliefs and style I should research into nature but by looking into the more unconventional side such as creepy crawlies and things that have hidden beauty about them such as Beetles which will be one of my main sources of inspiration. The insect’s hard and unusually shaped shell as well as its other body parts contrasts with the beautiful colours and patterns this is what appeals to me.

When writing the hypothetical brief I found it both an easy and challenging process, the template given helped the flow of information but I struggled to find information about the ethics of the company which I would have liked to developed into further.

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed the new methods learnt and the process of part one, I have managed my time efficiently to ensure all tasks were completed on time and I am pleased with how I now feel as though I have started find my identity as a designer, I look forward to beginning to sample my designs and what part two will involve.

National Museum of Wales visit 5.11.14

Today I went to the National Museum of Wales to develop my research into my theme further. Whilst I was there I visited the natural history section where I found a large variety of insects such as butterflies, beetles, moths and spiders. I also looked at the exotic plants they had but only found a small number that were relevant to my work. Whilst I was there I took a number of photographs to use for future reference and also done some drawings varying in scale, technique and time spent drawing them.

I was hoping to find some more exotic animals such as birds, bats and small land animals but they only had a small collection there so I feel as though my research will be more heavily based on insects and some plants as I wanted some first hand images opposed to downloading all of them from the internet.

I will be focusing on the color and structure of the insects for the time being until I move onto part two of this module where then I will being to plan and construct my design.

4.11.2014 Colour workshop

Today we looked at colour techniques and theories such as harmonious tones, primary and secondary colours and contrasting colours. Using gouache we had to recreate these and organise then within our own time for next weeks deadline. Overall I have enjoys this session today and feel as though I have gained valuable information which will aid me through part two of this module. I will be applying the relevant colour theories to the work I will be creating for my client. I look forward to dele oping further into these various colour themes and I have thoroughly enjoyed today.IMG_0382.JPG

30.10.2014 Digital stitch workshop

Today I was in the workshop doing digital stitch, I have started experimenting with texture and colir related to my chosen theme which consists on jungle colours and nature. I chose to study a beetle today and use the template of a drawing to use of the Digitizer software.

The work didn’t come out quite how I was expecting. It took two hours to create on the software and then 64 minutes to stitch. I have made a Few mistakes but I will learn from these so that it doesn’t happen again. Overall today has been a productive day and I am quite happy with the end result.

28.10.2014 pecha kucha presentation and inspiration board.

Today I had present my pecha kucha presentation and had in my mood boards. I enjoyed watching everyone else’s presentations and think that they done a very good job. I Believe my presentation went well as I spoke confidently and maintained eye contact with my audience.

I have update my inspiration board with a few images that have caught my eye recently. I found a few quirky objects in a local boutique shop and they have given me some new ideas and inspired me to try some new techniques.

Overall today has been a very good an successful day and I am pleased with how my presentation went and how my inspiration board is coming along.
