Experimentation

Over the past few weeks I have been struggling to get my head around how I would translate my chosen material onto a greetings card, I have now decided not to focus primarily on silk as a whole and simply use elements of it, I believe this will be far more effective. Also because silk is a very fiddly fabric I have chosen to work with fabrics that have a similar sheen/effect which are easier to work with for example satin.

I have looked in to scanning shiny materials but this hasn’t worked as well as I had originally hoped, to over come this I will be manipulating the materials and then taking photos of them in a controlled environment  where I will experiment with light and shading which will then later be edited in photoshop which I plan to use as a background for my cards.

Friday workshops

After having my tutorial the other day I have been relaxing on how I could create something that would be suitable for a card design, although I am not focusing specifically on how the card will be made as such but what would be a realistic and interesting piece that someone would like to purchase.

I originally planned on working in the stitch room today to learn more about fabric manipulation but got caught up experimenting with printing, I investigated more into acid dyes and shibori techniques. I also expeimented with some filing at the end of the day, I used a holographic film and the effect was very effective especially when the sample catches the light. I will be working on some new designs during the week to experiment more with the negative space of the design and see what the result is when I apply foiling again.

Aside from not sticking to my original plan I feel as though today has been a productive day, I will be devoting more time to stitch on Monday to establish a time scale and get a better understanding of my ability within stitch for this module. I feel as though the dying process and printing was successful, I will be focussing on mark making and bold lines within my designs as these have proven to produce better results when screen-printing.

Below results of todays workshop:

Formative Assessment 29.10.15

Today in my presentation I discussed how using silk material is the main element of my theme as well as incorporating small metallic tones combined with my colour trends for A/W 16/17 sourced from WGSN. I feel as though the presentation went well and I felt comfortable putting across techniques that I could use in both print and stitch. I have decided to work with both declines because I feel as though silk has so much potential to produce amazing results through various treatments applied to the fabric, inks and stitches.

It was advised that I could broaden my age range to sixty plus for my client section because this theme is associated with luxury and disposable income, something the older population have.

Im really pleased overall because I only went over the set time slightly and received some very positive feedback with plenty of recommendations on how I can experiment with different mediums such as fabric paints and a number of designers were suggested to me as well which I intended on researching. Up until now I was focussing on designing for the gift wrap range but someone suggested to consider the card range as this would offer a simpler alternative opposed to trying to format a silk design for a roll of gift wrap which would be difficult to create a flowing pattern. Reflecting upon this advice I think it would be wiser to design for the card range as I can experiment with composition, finishes, boarders and many other things with more ease also the prototypes would probably be a bit easier to make. I plan on developing my drawings further which I will then use to move onto creating samples and creating my prototypes. I feel positive about moving onto the next stage of this module and feel as though through exploring silk through a more hands on approach it will also help to strengthen my constellation research.

28.10.2015 Lecture Professional Development

Todays Professional Development session was quite an interesting one, there was a lot of emptiness put on the importance of reliable information, facts and knowledge about the company you are research or potentially are being interviews for.

Another point that was made was SWOT, this is something that I had never heard of prior to todays lecture, SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. I feel as though by learning about this it will make it easier for me to remember and apply this to my analysis’s in the future, we were also asked to question the companies U.S.P’s (Unique selling points) this is something I am already familiar with so I was able to identify these during a exercise we were given to apply these techniques to. Over all I feel as though todays lecture was a insightful and helpful one and will help me to strengthen my research throughout this module and hopefully in the future.

Monday work shops

This week I was planning to start working on my samples after researching the various ways in which I can manipulate silk and what printing techniques can be used on it. I was disappointed to find out that there is still no silk in the print room but there is some in the stitch so I have decided to focus on fabric manipulation in stitch for the next up coming workshop. I will also ask the stitch technician if I can have some samples of silk for print.

I put my mood boards up today and I am very pleased with them, to continue my aim of being sustainable during this model I recycled last years mood boards by removing what I could and covering damaged areas. My boards have a variety of key words and fabrics which translate the message I am trying to portray. I want the client to be able to interact with what he/she see’s before them, I feel as though this is an important factor as it related back to my main material I am researching with the concept of silk being a fabric that people want to touch.

Overall today has been successful, I have overcome issues and I look forward to the rest of this week when I can present my work and continue experimenting with this fabric.

2.10.15 Workshop day!

So today I have prepped my screen to do some quick experiments with the variety of silks on hand in the studio today, whilst waiting for my screen to dry I have been researching colour trends for A/W 2016/17 and feel inspired by what i have found. It has given me a stronger idea of where I want to go with my theme now as well as deciding on what designers/ artists I am considering to research. The trend I have chosen to focus on is Elemental, I feel as though the soft tones and metallic shades within this trend will link in really well with the material silk depending on what finish material I choose. I am believe the soft shine of the silk combined with some neutral tones could work really well together.I have reconsidered what print design I want to use for this theme, I have chosen not to go for bold prints and I am now considering more subtle coloured prints which compliment my colour scheme but with well defined marks, this will be done through exposing one of my designs and screen printing a strong defined pattern. Dancing Droplets is one of the colour trends that is within this category, this is inspired by the work of Luke Elwes, Within the description it is mentioned how he tries to capture light and movement within this work, with silk being my main material of interest I feel this could be a useful piece of research to try and capture the same movement and light that makes silk so luxurious and beautiful and try to translate it to a 2D or 3D range of paper products.

I feel as today has been very productive, I will now print out my research and continue to build up my research file, I am still yet to decide on what design I want but I feel as though I am getting closer. I will leave my screen until Monday and work on some designs over the weekend so I have some interesting designs to sample Monday rather than a quick sketch that I am not entirely satisfied with.

01.10.15 International Greetings visit.

After visiting the international Greetings site today I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. I felt inspired by the work load that the designers have to deal with on a day to day basis and the way in which they present their work, for example the prototypes and mood boards have made me want to experiment more with mini prototypes and more 3D eliments on my future boards. The visit has made me consider what textures and colour schemes I could use to make my work subtle but still eye catching.

I like the idea of being able to create a Co-ordinating range of paper based greetings products which makes you want to touch the product, be interactive with what you’ve bought, this is something I personally always love when browsing at cards, I find it so much more interesting than a flat piece of with a C.A.D image on the front. I want to experiment as much as possible with silk and explore the ways in which I can combine elements of silk material or the allusion of silk and transfer this onto a variety of products. One way I have considered being able to do this is manipulating the silk into a desired style and scanning it into my computer where I can then experiment even further with composition, lighting and other images which I could possible place on top of the silk to fit my theme.

After going through the brief again I have decided not to go with the luxury design of Tom Smith as this is a exclusive Christmas, traditional range of greeting cards, wrap and various other products. I feel as though that by going with the more “everyday” theme I have a broader market to taylor my theme to once I have chosen it. I would personally feel quite restricted if I was to stick to just the Christmas theme, something I haven’t experimented with before.

As I plan on working with silk I am considering working towards a wedding themed gift wrap range but as I experiment and research more I could chose a new theme. These are all just ideas at the moment and I am really excited about experimenting over the next few weeks.

30.9.15 Brainstorming and planning.

My main objective for today has been trying to figure out what areas of of my theme I want to research over the coming weeks and how I can also link in my dissertation research into this module. This is not a requirement of this module it is just something I would like to do as I believe it could strengthen both subjects if I have a good understanding of what I am working with.

I am currently researching silks history and its current connotations, I believe I could link this into subject by experimenting the material itself by manipulating it, experimenting with dyes, using the raw material itself or experimenting with scale and composition for example using a simple silk bow. I have no specific designs in mind at the moment, I am waiting until the International greetings trip tomorrow to gain a greater understanding of what the client would like and how I can tailor the needs and wants around my individual style to create something new.

As part of the brief I have been asked to chose from two design lines: Tom Smith luxury brand which represents the top end of the market, or Giftmaker Collection, the high volume market brand. I will make my decision once I have seen their work tomorrow.

I am looking to focus on floral and animal motifs as well as including some silk aspects. I am looking to be very more environmentally friendly during this module so I will be looking to use water based inks/dyes that are less harmful, I will be researching into how these dyes will react to different silks and papers over the next few weeks. I am looking to be making my own handmade paper during this module as I feel as though it adds a sense of quality to the end product.

These are some of the images which have inspired me so far and what I have decided to keep on my inspiration wall, This style of bold lines and defined mark making is something that I can relate to as my preferred style. I will not be focussing on this company within my work but I personally find these images very inspiring. I will decided my colour scheme over the next few weeks once I have an understanding of my chosen designer/market and being working on my mood boards.

I have chosen the books by Ruth Issett and Kath Russon to kick start my research into print and the different ways in which I can use silk within my work. I am looking to step slightly outside of my comfort zone this year but be comfortable enough to be confident with what I am doing, hopefully this will result in me producing some interesting new designs this year.

Reflection of Subject

This overall experience of subject has been a very eye opening experience. I feel as though I have gained valuable skills which will benefit me in the future for example learning how to create accurate repeats by hand opposed to relying on computer software. I have found working with the theme beetles quite difficult as a lot of people have been creeped out by my designs and have commented they wouldn’t personally choose them if given the choice of alternative designs such as florals est.

I feel as though I am much more confident with photoshop this term as I have come to realise the errors I was making before which I couldn’t figure out. This has given me a massive confidence boost with CAD because I feel as though it is one less thing I can stress out about next year. I feel as though my presentation skills have improved and I am ow taking a lot more care with my samples as well as the planning and organisation of these designs. I did originally struggle with coming up with a variation of designs but once I had overcome my issues with photoshop I found that I was able to create a number of new and interesting designs by manipulating or isolating particular ares of the beetles to create more interesting designs which could then later be turned into repeat patterns.

I have had some technical issues with my own personal printer when trying to match the colours from my Mac to the actual hard copy but this hasn’t bothered me it much as I know now how to adjust the settings to avoid this in the future, unfortunately I did run out of my colour cartridge which prevented me from reprinting my alternative work. I feel as though this isn’t too important though as the focus should just be on the design and to overcome the issue of printing my final designs I paid for them to be printed in university.

After helping out during the buddy experience I feel as though I have learnt some lessons which I can put into practice next year to avoid tears and mistakes, for example buying a bad and top coat of white emulation to save on time. I also learned to plan in advance, stay organised and always to have a back up plan encase something goes wrong. It was a nice experience to see the final results of all the hard work that the third years had put into their degree show and was interesting to see the variation of designs and techniques used by the students. I also found the variation of display styles very interesting as some went for extravagant props that tied into their theme and others kept their space very crisp and minimal. I was also given advice by a number of the third years as I was quite inquizative about what modules are set during third year and if I should prepare for anything in particular. All of the girls were very helpful and friendly and answered all of my questions, also whilst working in the exhibition area I also learnt a few tips myself which I hope I can pass on to my level 5 buddy next year to help them make working with me easier/ more efficient. Over all it was a very pleasant experience that I would recommend do any second year student to help towards preparation for third year.

I am yet to plan and decided what my theme for third year will be and I am looking for something which will spark an interest for me. I hope to design something new but I have a strong hunch that florals will be incorporated into my work one way or another. I will be traveling during the summer visiting exhibitions and places of interest to hopefully find the inspiration I am looking for.

I feel as though my final collection of designs do offer variety in both pattern and colours, I have tried to avoid focussing specifically on beetles as I had come to realise they weren’t to everyones taste. I have offered both large scale designs and very intricate designs which do not suggest that they are beetle designs until they are observed very closely an example of this would be my spiral design. I have experimented with both textures and nature, I believe the samples where I have isolated areas of the beetles to create new repeats have been the most successful and interesting. Six of my samples have been digitally printed and I am very pleased with the final result as I was warned the colour black typically bleeds into the fabric, this is something I didn’t realise until after they had been printed. My other six have been printed onto paper and again these a lot offer variety and I believe they look good too.

Overall I have gained many skills during this term and learnt a great deal all of which will benefit me during third year and has left me feeling excited about starting new projects as I now feel a lot more confident with CAD and creating designs by hand. I have learnt a great deal from my field experience which had influenced my main studies within subject such as understanding I colour and behaving in a more professional manner.

Friday 1.5.15

Today I exposed my other screen and continued printing on my own. As the print room was quite I was able to complete all my prints in just a few hours. I’m really pleased with two of my beetle prints but unfortunately my other screen was blocked quite badly with emulation. I believe this may be because it was exposed for too long and as a result the emulation has hardened. I will speak to the print technician next time I go to print and discuss lowering. The exposure time and see what comes of this.

I have also submitted my dissertation proposal form today which I am really pleased about. I feel confident that I am in control of my coursework at the moment.

Overall today has been a productive day, I plan on spending the rest of my day writing up my field reflection and working on some designs for my core collection.
