Reflection of Subject

This overall experience of subject has been a very eye opening experience. I feel as though I have gained valuable skills which will benefit me in the future for example learning how to create accurate repeats by hand opposed to relying on computer software. I have found working with the theme beetles quite difficult as a lot of people have been creeped out by my designs and have commented they wouldn’t personally choose them if given the choice of alternative designs such as florals est.

I feel as though I am much more confident with photoshop this term as I have come to realise the errors I was making before which I couldn’t figure out. This has given me a massive confidence boost with CAD because I feel as though it is one less thing I can stress out about next year. I feel as though my presentation skills have improved and I am ow taking a lot more care with my samples as well as the planning and organisation of these designs. I did originally struggle with coming up with a variation of designs but once I had overcome my issues with photoshop I found that I was able to create a number of new and interesting designs by manipulating or isolating particular ares of the beetles to create more interesting designs which could then later be turned into repeat patterns.

I have had some technical issues with my own personal printer when trying to match the colours from my Mac to the actual hard copy but this hasn’t bothered me it much as I know now how to adjust the settings to avoid this in the future, unfortunately I did run out of my colour cartridge which prevented me from reprinting my alternative work. I feel as though this isn’t too important though as the focus should just be on the design and to overcome the issue of printing my final designs I paid for them to be printed in university.

After helping out during the buddy experience I feel as though I have learnt some lessons which I can put into practice next year to avoid tears and mistakes, for example buying a bad and top coat of white emulation to save on time. I also learned to plan in advance, stay organised and always to have a back up plan encase something goes wrong. It was a nice experience to see the final results of all the hard work that the third years had put into their degree show and was interesting to see the variation of designs and techniques used by the students. I also found the variation of display styles very interesting as some went for extravagant props that tied into their theme and others kept their space very crisp and minimal. I was also given advice by a number of the third years as I was quite inquizative about what modules are set during third year and if I should prepare for anything in particular. All of the girls were very helpful and friendly and answered all of my questions, also whilst working in the exhibition area I also learnt a few tips myself which I hope I can pass on to my level 5 buddy next year to help them make working with me easier/ more efficient. Over all it was a very pleasant experience that I would recommend do any second year student to help towards preparation for third year.

I am yet to plan and decided what my theme for third year will be and I am looking for something which will spark an interest for me. I hope to design something new but I have a strong hunch that florals will be incorporated into my work one way or another. I will be traveling during the summer visiting exhibitions and places of interest to hopefully find the inspiration I am looking for.

I feel as though my final collection of designs do offer variety in both pattern and colours, I have tried to avoid focussing specifically on beetles as I had come to realise they weren’t to everyones taste. I have offered both large scale designs and very intricate designs which do not suggest that they are beetle designs until they are observed very closely an example of this would be my spiral design. I have experimented with both textures and nature, I believe the samples where I have isolated areas of the beetles to create new repeats have been the most successful and interesting. Six of my samples have been digitally printed and I am very pleased with the final result as I was warned the colour black typically bleeds into the fabric, this is something I didn’t realise until after they had been printed. My other six have been printed onto paper and again these a lot offer variety and I believe they look good too.

Overall I have gained many skills during this term and learnt a great deal all of which will benefit me during third year and has left me feeling excited about starting new projects as I now feel a lot more confident with CAD and creating designs by hand. I have learnt a great deal from my field experience which had influenced my main studies within subject such as understanding I colour and behaving in a more professional manner.

Thursday workshops.

Today I focussed on prepping my screens for printing next week, as the print room was very busy i thought I thought it would be more suitable to print the following week to ensure my screens are ready and I can experiment throughout the day without having to prep more screens. Unfortunately when cleaning the screen after exposing it the emulation failed to clear and has left the screen blocked with a spotty look within my design. This screen will do for experimenting but I do not intend on this happening in the future as it looks unprofessional and prevents the ink from spreading evenly.

I have arranged with the print technician to expose another screen tomorrow to try and over come this issue, I will do some test prints and hopefully the results will be better than todays.

Other than focussing on screen printing I have also been working on my pre dissertation form and PDP while I was waiting for my screens to dry.

Overall I feel as though today has been a productive day and I am feeling gradually more confident working more independently within the print studio as I am now more familiar with the materials after a long break from printing. Even though my first screen did not turn out as I had hoped this is a issue that can easily be overcome.

Dissertation proposal from reflection.

I have found my constellation experience this year a very positive one. I feel more confident with the subject that I have chosen to research and so far have found it to be a very interesting and enjoyable experience. I feel as though by researching this subject in greater depth it will benifit me greatly in the future as it will give me a much greater understanding of how a bigger range of materials react under different circumstances for example cotton, polyester and synthetic materials. This is a key factor when working within the textile industry as having a understanding of the language of the materials that are being dealt can impact the overall outcome of the piece. If the designer does not know how a material such as polyester will react to extreme heat and curtain chemicals it could result it the fabric being ruined. This is also important infromation to understand when sending mixing directions to printers or design companies as it can result in costing the designer a large amount of money if wrong.

I originally found sorting academic information quite difficult as I didn’t think to look into the science of materials, once I had looked into this section of textiles I found the process much easier and found a wealth of information explaining the properties of various fabrics which allowed me to compare the key material that I am researching along side with other materials which are generated in a similar way. I have found researching how clothing impacts females particularly difficult, I have had to look through various books which mainly focus on the movements of feminism but nothing as of yet has focussed specifically on individual items of clothing or materials that depict meanings. I believe by focussing my attentions on books related more closely to fashion / textiles opposed to femninsm it will give me the answers I am looking for.

I plan on reading more books about Alexandra McQeens work over the summer as I struggled to find books that focussed on the theory behind his work during this term as this designer in particular has been quite popular within constellation and the best books were all out on loan. To overcome issues such as this in the future I intend to research online and use summon where online books and journals will be more accessible and will prevent me losing out in the future. I would like to find another designer who works in a similar way by debility conveying messages but by creating a contrasting effect to emphasise the different techniques designers use to convey various meanings or create curtain effects. I will spend my time researching through the university library to find a designer I feel will be suitable for this subject.

I am glad that i have chosen to focus on silk in particular, this is because my findings so far have conflicted / opposed my preconceptions of the material its self. It has often been depicted as a fragile material worn by women to create a desirable/ sexy appearance but in contrast this material is actually resilient fabric and the fabric will only cling if the designer has intended for it to behave like this, this is because due to the way in which the designer decided to sew the material and treat it, this is how it will behave. In contrast to silks durability though it is sensitive to sunlight which weakens the fibres and eventually yellows the garment if not stored properly.

I found the way in which designers are creating man made fabrics interesting as they try to mimic the organic properties but manipulating them to suit the consumers wants and needs by making them more resilient for everyday wear and daily use.

Overall I have really enjoyed this experience so far and feel as though I have grown more confident with researching and breaking down academic information, this is something I previously struggled with. I believe that I have improved my planning and ability to source relevant information for my subject. My only weaknesses during this project has been my ability to find a book specifically aimed at breaking down the conventions of clothing for women but I am confident that by taking the time to closely examine books fashion and textile related I will be able to overcome this issue. I also found the journal section difficult as there doesn’t seem to be many journal pieces online directly related to the subject that I am researching, thought I did find one journal which I feel as though small sections do relate to my subject once elaborated. I also plan to make more regular blog entries as this is something that I often forget to do. I believe by recording my findings on a more regular basis will create a habit.

19.3.15 Workshop day & 20.3.15

Today I focussed on trying to complete my final collection of deisgns on fabric. I did originally struggle to upload my sketches and isolate the images to create a repeat pattern, with the help of Steve our print technican I was able to eventually create some interesting repeats by using photoshop and illustrator. I have tried to stick to my new colour scheme but feel as though some slightly lighter colours were more effective on curtain designs as my new colour scheme consists of some very opaque colours. I did try to do some digital stitch but struggled as my image was far to dark to work with and I struggled to define the outline. I hope to use this in the future as I do believe print and stitch techniques work well together.

My digital prints were printed today but unfortunately they have to be treated before I can take them away to crop and mount which means they will not be ready for Mondays hand in. I am disappointed about this but not too much as this is only a formal assessment and there is still room for improvement. To prevent situations like this in the future and especially towards the time of my final assignment I will be planning my work much further in advance to allow time for experimentation or mistakes. This will give me time to be more organised and calm when producing samples which will hopefully prevent further mistakes and time wasting.

I feel as though the past few days have been difficult as I had spent too much time on one design opposed to working with multiple designs. This has resulted in me falling behind but I will be working hard over the weekend to ensure I catch up.

17.3.15 Studio work.

Today I added more visual images to my inspiration board as I felt as though it wasn’t fulfilling its purpose, I have added ore images of beetles and images that could be used for backgrounds for my final designs. I have focussed a lot on the textures of wood as they relate to my theme of beetles and I believe they would be interesting for a print. I have edited one of my wood images to use for a screen, I will be confirming if the image is suitable for exposing tomorrow with our technical demonstrator.

During the afternoon I tried to complete my accurate coquis designs but made an error in my measurements, something i didn’t notice until the final stage. This did not bother me though as I can just add that one to my practise collection and try again tomorrow, practise makes perfect.

Overall I feel like today has been successful and I will be continuing my work this evening to try and get ahead of schedule if possible. I hope that I will be able produce some fabric samples this week but this will depend on my time management and if I am able to complete my repeat patterns before Thursday.

Design Centre Chelsea Harbour.

Today by far was the best and most beneficial trip I’ve been on with he university so far. So many show rooms and so much inspiration. I really did love it there and discovered a number of new designers with beautiful inspiring designs. I also found it interesting how I was told two Cardiff Met students had there own designs on show within the building, unfortunately by the time I had found this out it was almost time to leave but I look forward into researching into these two designers further to see how they got where they are now.

Out of all the show rooms I found Cole & Son the most inspiring. From the vibrant eye catching displays to the fresh and on trend wall hangings. I also noticed a video demonstrating how they create the wall hangings and it is all done by hand, this is another reason why I loved their work so much because I really feel that skills like are rare and of high quality. I was truly engrossed watching how the designer printer meter after meter of wallpaper using silk screens.

I have ordered a number of samples from a number of designer companies both fabric and paper based. I also took a number of textured samples such as leather samplers which I plan on adding to my mood moodboards. I also found a number of mood boards on display which inspired me to develop my own boards further to a more professional standard.

The only thing I feel I could have done better was spending more time with the show room representatives or the designers themselves to find out more information but to overcome this issue I took a information card from every show room I was interested in to research into them further during my own time.

I have really enjoyed today and am already looking forward to going again next year. I will be looking out for other events such as these over the next few weeks as I found this one so beneficial. I have a new sense of motivation and inspiration.

10.3.15 Studio design lectures and tutorials.

Today we were briefed on how to create a accurate repeat pattern using grid paper and tracing paper. I found this a veryusuful lecture because I believe that by using more physical and traditional methods to create patterned repeats is a rare and valuable skill to have in a generation where technology is so heavily depended on, I also feel as though there is a greater sense of quality when you have a physical design in front of you. I find it a much more rewarding and satisfying process by creating repeats this was as it also helps me to work on my organisation, drawing skills, presentation and quality control so by using a more practical method I am refining skills I would otherwise not really use when using Photoshop or Illustrator.

Where I was very sloppy and careless with my work before part two I can now see how I am trying to be more professional and organised within my work, I am really pleased with this because it means the old bad habits are being replaced with good ones.

I feel as though my tutorial went really well, I did originally struggle to understand the brief by my tutor went through it step by step to ensure I understood what I had to by the end of the session. It is evident that I need far more imagery rather than just focussing on the one beetle, Helen suggested breaking my designs up into four “families” which means looking a four different ways I could experiment with the design for example family 1: experimenting with texture, family two experimenting with layout est. I believe by doing this it will make the work load seem a lot less daunting and more manageable.

I am really looking forward to creating my final twelve designs and I am also really pleased with what I have learnt today including the guidelines on copyright laws. I feel as thought today has been very successful and I look forward to continuing my experimentation tomorrow.

5.3.15 Workshop day.

Today I was shown how to do repeat patterns on photoshop, I fund this a very helpful session because I am familiar with the controls and commands that help towards creating a repeat pattern but couldn’t remember the order they went in. I feel more confident now that by the end of the week these skills will aid my designs.

By the afternoon we were shown how to create a repeat pattern with accuracy when layering multiple screens. I had a lot of questions to ask with regards to techniques I had learnt from my placement and if I could apply the skills I learnt to my practice in university such as using a laser if I wanted very precise accuracy, for example trying to layer an outline over an image. Steve the print technical did advice I didn’t do that due to the complexity of it he suggested working with designs that sit next to each other not directly on top of one another because if one of the screens is slightly out it will show. I appreciate his advice and can see where he’s coming from, by doing this I would be making more work for myself and I would prefer to work quickly and effciently opposed to spending a lot more time on trying to get a perfect line up. The time spent doing that could be better spent experimenting and researching further. I was advised that if I did want a very detailed print then the digital print machines would be a more appropriate method.

This has made me reconsider the level of detail I want in my designs, as I would much prefer to be able to experiment with inks, pastes and materials I want to stick to screen printing opposed to working with digital stitch. All this means is that I will have to carefully think about how my mark marking on my design will translate into silk screen. I believe by making more bold likes and perhaps experimenting with half tone would be interesting.

Overall I have really enjoyed today and feel as though I have had a lot of questions answered and now feel more confident with photoshop and my planned designs.

26.02.15 Workshop Day

Today I was planning on taking part in the refresher course on Photoshop and Illustrator but due to the teacher being ill I couldn’t so chose to go into the stitch room instead to work on some samples which I could put into my technical file to replace older ones which arnt particularly great. As i haven’t sew in so long I dd find myself really struggling and began to feel quite upset with how much of a challenge I found this. To overcome this issue I will be going through my technical file during my own time where I can take my time with what I am doing and read though the hand outs to understand what to do and where I am going wrong, I find this the most effective way personally to overcoming problems as I don’t feel pressurized or nervous in a busy environment. I hope by doing this i will strengthen my skills within stitch and will hopefully be able to combine print and stitch within some of my samples during this module.

After my work experience I found myself questioning what I will be doing once I leave university and where I want to be in five years time, I have thought about gaining more experience with designers swell as setting up my own business. To gain a great understanding of what starting up a business involves I have signed up to the creative workshop sessions which take place every Thursday. I attended one tonight and found it a very insightful and inspiring class, it has made me realise that starting up your own business isn’t impossible and not that expensive. There is still a lot to learn over the coming weeks but I feel as though these will benefit me greatly now and in the future. I look forward to next weeks session and feel even though I was unable to attend the print workshop today has still been successful and insightful.

Return to subject: Tutorials and briefing.

Today was the start of part two of this module, after going over the timetable and brief I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into my first task. My work placement has really given me a new sense of incentive and enthusiasm for my studies now and I am more determined to do better and be more organized. I feel confident with which direction I see my self going in as a designer and what I plan to do with my work during the module, after a brief tutorial I have decided I only want to make some minor changes to my hypothetical brief as I want to stick with the same client but I will be changing the techniques I originally set out to use and my original colour scheme. I am currently waiting on samples from my chosen designer so I am able to study they’re work closer and use these as inspiration on my board in university.

I am really excited about what new skills I will learn during part two and if I will learn any new skills. I am extremely pleased that I learnt so much on my placement that feeds back into subject for example colour separation, half drop repeats and CAD are just a couple of things which I learnt and which are part of this module so I am feeling very confident at the moment in time.
