17.3.15 Studio work.

Today I added more visual images to my inspiration board as I felt as though it wasn’t fulfilling its purpose, I have added ore images of beetles and images that could be used for backgrounds for my final designs. I have focussed a lot on the textures of wood as they relate to my theme of beetles and I believe they would be interesting for a print. I have edited one of my wood images to use for a screen, I will be confirming if the image is suitable for exposing tomorrow with our technical demonstrator.

During the afternoon I tried to complete my accurate coquis designs but made an error in my measurements, something i didn’t notice until the final stage. This did not bother me though as I can just add that one to my practise collection and try again tomorrow, practise makes perfect.

Overall I feel like today has been successful and I will be continuing my work this evening to try and get ahead of schedule if possible. I hope that I will be able produce some fabric samples this week but this will depend on my time management and if I am able to complete my repeat patterns before Thursday.

15.10.14

Today i will be working from home as the paper making work shop was full. Instead i will be working on my CV and photographing my portfolio to send to a company which have replied to my request for work experience.

I have applied to multiple companies and only Timorous Beastie have gotten back to me requesting this information, I am very excited as this company is one of my favorite and one that i aspire to be like someday. After reviewing my work I hope that they will take me on for work experience sometime after Christmas which would be more appropriate, this would allow me time to arrange accommodation and travel expenses.

Once I have done this i will be heading into town looking for inspiration for my mood-boards and making notes and visual records of my journey. images

Print- Photoshop

Today i was in 10-16:45 trying to use Photoshop without any results produced today. I have used this software before but its not as simple as riding a bike, you do forget things with this. The aim of today was to make a collage of photos ready to be printed onto fabric which would then be steamed so that the ink can set. After speaking to the technician if i could come in another day  to try again and if he could go through the steps of using this software with me. I shall be looking forward to this and will be taking more photos for this in the mean time.

Lecture: constellation 31/10/2013

Lecture Held by Dr. Mahnaz Shsh

This lecture was all about questioning our adaptation of things, the differences between phenomenal and literal in art and design. She gave us the definitions of these and what the differences are between them. Being as i have never heard of these before i did find this lecture helpful. i Hope that these will be able to help me with my work in the future.

Fabric of Britain

Fabric of Britain

Wallpaper has been considered in the past as boring. Only a handful of British designers have become house hold names. Wallpaper broadens and taste and aspirations.

“more than just a background it is a fabric of our lives”

During the early 18th century wallpaper was considered to be fashionable, Back then most wallpapers were created through the use of black screen printed. This technique goes back even further to the 16th century. During this era these were mainly simple black and white prints that were produced by stationers. These prints were used for document box’s. By the 1500’s people began to use these prints and sticking them to they’re walls by matching up lines to create a repeated pattern, these were known as paper hangings.

During the 18th century Flock wallpaper was created to imitate the same effect as rich silk velvet. Flock is a raised fury design. It is made by adding the background color to the wallpaper which is applied with the use of round brushes in circular motions to work on the color. even pressure when doing this is essential. The pattern is printed using carved printing blocks. By carefully lining the patterns a repeated pattern is created. A sticky, slow drying paint is used for the printing process so that it grasps the flock later on.

The flock is cut up wool which is sprinkled over the sticky wallpaper. When this process is complete the finish result is matte flock with a sheen background. These Designs have recently come back into fashion and are widely used as a feature wall in most homes today.

Chinese wallpaper

These were considered to be very luxurious and expensive. These designs were all hand painted, Britain later than began to follow this trend and also began painting similar designs.

During this program it showed that you are able to book private viewings to view a selection of wallpaper print catalogs.

one of which is the was order book of cowton and sons (1824)

the wallpapers were expensive rolls. This was the first time you could get rolls of wallpaper because they were single sheets glued together.

In 1839 wallpaper machines were made which was a slow-moving development until 1850. Whereas block printing was converted into manufacturing machines which could produce up to twenty different colors and could produce up 250 prints an hour which could produce up to 2000 meters of wallpaper. During this time bright and bold wallpapers became popular because they aged slower and houses were so dirty from people works down the mines est. People didn’t like overly realistic wallpaper designs that had too much shading. Flat geometric or two dimension simple motifs designs were more desired.

I found this program particularity interesting because I find my self often being inspired and influenced by modern day designs and older designs.  Print making is one of my passions and i will be looking forward to the follow up episodes of this series.
